FIRE RESTRICTIONS




Oregon Department of Forestry Fire Restriction Notifications:

Public Fire Restrictions:

  • Smoking is prohibited while traveling, except in vehicles on improved roads, in boats on the water, and other designated locations.
  • Open fires are prohibited, including campfires, charcoal fires, cooking fires and warming fires, except at locations designated by the forester. Portable cooking stoves using liquefied or bottled fuels are allowed. 
  • The use of power saws is prohibited during extreme fire danger. 
  • Cutting, grinding and welding of metal is prohibited during extreme fire danger . 
  • The mowing of dried, cured grass is prohibited during extreme fire danger. 
  • Motor vehicles, including motorcycles and all-terrain vehicles, are only allowed on improved roads free of flammable vegetation during moderate, high and extreme fire danger. Does not apply for the culture and harvest of agricultural crops.
  • Possession of the following firefighting equipment is required during extreme fire danger while traveling, except on state highways, county roads and driveways: one shovel and one gallon of water or one 2 1⁄2 pound or larger fire extinguisher. All-terrain vehicles and motorcycles must be equipped with one 2 1⁄2 pound or larger fire extinguisher regardless of the fire danger.
  • Use of fireworks is prohibited.
  • Any electric fence controller in use shall be: 1) Listed by a nationally recognized testing laboratory or be certified by the Department of Consumer and Business Services; and 2) Operated in compliance with manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Any other spark-emitting internal combustion engine not specifically mentioned is prohibited during extreme fire danger. 
  • Aside from these restrictions, also prohibited throughout fire season is backyard debris burning, the use of exploding targets and tracer ammunition.

This is voluntary compilation of land closures provided by landowners to reduce fire starts during at risk conditions or to reduce illegal activities. Please contact landowners directly for more information regarding a specific area of interest. The following information does not constitute permission to enter private land, legally restrict access, or describe every area.

IFPL III. Restricted Shutdown The following is prohibited except as indicated: 
  • Cable yarding - except that gravity operated logging systems employing non-motorized carriages or approved motorized carriages (defined below), may operate between 8 P.M. and 1 P.M. when all blocks and moving lines are suspended 10 feet above the ground except the line between the carriage and the chokers and during rigging. 
  • The following are permitted to operate between the hours of 8 P.M. and 1 P.M. where mechanized equipment capable of constructing fire line is immediately available to quickly reach and effectively attack a fire start: 
  • Ground-based operations (defined below); 
  • Power saws on ground-based operations; 
  • Rotary head saw feller-bunchers with a continuous Firewatch; 
  • Non-rotary head saw feller-bunchers; 
  • Tethered logging systems (defined below). The following are permitted to operate between the hours of 8 P.M. and 1 P.M.: 
  • Power saws at loading sites; 
  • Loading or hauling of any product or material; 
  • Blasting; 
  • Welding, cutting, or grinding of metal; 
  • Any other spark emitting operation not specifically mentioned.

Fire season requirements for industrial operations 
The following fire season requirements become effective when fire season is declared in each Oregon Department of Forestry Fire Protection District, including those protected by associations (DFPA, CFPA, WRPA).

 Medford Interagency District 


Under the restrictions, campfires or any other type of open fire, including the use of charcoal briquettes, is prohibited on BLM-managed land. Additionally, power-driven machinery is prohibited in forested areas. This restriction includes power saws; equipment used for the cutting, grinding, or welding of metal; mowing of dry, cured grass with power equipment; and the use of any other spark-emitting equipment using an internal combustion engine.

Additionally, the following activities continue to be restricted:

  • Building, maintaining, attending, or using a fire, campfire, or stove fire, including charcoal briquettes except at a designated area.
  • Smoking is only allowed while inside a vehicle or while stopped in an area at least three (3) feet in diameter that is clear of flammable vegetation. 
  • Operating a motor vehicle and parking off road (including motorcycles and all-terrain vehicles) is only allowed on roadways clear of flammable vegetation. 
  • Using fireworks, exploding targets, or tracer ammunition is prohibited. 
  • Using a chainsaw or other equipment with internal combustion engines for felling, bucking, skidding, woodcutting, or any other operation is prohibited. 
  • Welding or operating a torch with an open flame is prohibited. 

Visitors to lands managed by the BLM are also required to carry tools with them to ensure small fires can be put out quickly, including a shovel, axe, and at least one gallon of water or a 2.5-pound fire extinguisher.

***Public Lands Closures are in effect for the Rogue-River Siskiyou National Forest***


US Forest Service states the following are Prohibited: 
  • Building, maintaining, attending, or using a fire, campfire, or stove fire.
  • Smoking, except in an enclosed vehicle or building, or in developed recreation sites, or while stopped in an area at least 3 feet in diameter that is barren or cleared of any flammable material.
  • Welding or operating an acetylene or other torch with open flame.
  • Operating a chainsaw or any other equipment powered by an internal combustion engine between the hours of 9 a.m to 8 p.m. 

    Exemptions:

  • Using a stove or grill that is solely fueled by liquid petroleum or liquid petroleum gas (LPG) fuels.
  • Persons with a Forest Service permit specifically exempting them from the prohibitions.
  • Any Federal, State, or local officer, or member of an organized rescue or firefighting force in the performance of official duty.
  • Persons operating generators with an approved spark arresting device in an area that is barren or cleared of all overhead and surrounding flammable materials within 3 feet of the generator.
  • Shooting firearms IS allowed. Just make sure to follow normal federal rules: No shooting within a 150 yards of a campsite, developed recreation site or occupied area, residence or building. No shooting across a road, trail or body of water, or in any manner or place whereby any person property is exposed to injury or damage as a result of such discharge. No shooting in a cave.
